Did you know Malaysia Air Flight 17 was full of corpses when it
took off from Amsterdam? Did you know that, for some darkly
inexplicable reason,
on July 17, MH17 moved off the standard flight path that it had
taken every time before, and moved north, toward rebel-held areas
outside Donetsk?

Meeting the girls in
Babymetal up close reveals one important truth: they
were obviously grown in Japan’s cuteness vats, right
next to Pikachu and Totoro and those flying squirrels
with the huge eyes. They
are almost preternaturally adorable. Therein lies a lot of the
appeal, of course.
The contrast of their wide-eyed innocence with the
unexpectedly intricate metal assault makes for an
appealing dynamic.
It’s a great shtick, and their personas are carefully
crafted in videos and on stage.
In person, though, Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal
seem like three teenage girls excited and nervous for
their first ever American performance (read our review
of the show).
They are also, by now,
experienced industry professionals. Surrounded
by their retinue, armed with preapproved questions
filtered through their tour manager/translator, and with
the imminent need to run to practice for the evening’s
show, there was very little room for spontaneity or
in-depth analysis.
On the other hand, it’s not really like that was
expected. Instead, Babymetal’s first American interview
presents a snapshot of young women experiencing the
world for the first time through the lens of a genre
they didn’t even know existed before joining the band.
Your body isn’t the only thing that grows quickly
during the first years of life. Your microbiome, the
population of bacteria that lives in your gut and
elsewhere in your body, has a growth spurt, too―and
disrupting it might lead to health problems down the
line. A new study of mice shows that interrupting
the development of gut microbial populations with
low doses of antibiotics early in life disturbs
their metabolism and boosts the risk of obesity
later on.
In recent years, researchers have realized that the
microbes living in your gut are crucial for several
functions, including building a strong immune
system. Infancy is a particularly important time for
developing a robust microbiome, a process that
begins with the microbes a newborn picks up on its
way through the birth canal. Children born by
cesarean section, as well as those who receive
antibiotics during their first year of life, have a
higher risk of developing immune disorders such as
asthma and type 1 diabetes. Epidemiological studies
show an elevated risk for obesity among these
children as well, although the effect seems to be
very small.
But Martin Blaser, a microbiologist at New York
University in New York City, suspected that the
microbiome’s development has a bigger impact on
metabolism later in life.
Studies with livestock such as pigs and chickens
showed that low doses of antibiotics administered
when animals are young caused them to grow faster
and increased the amount of fat they gained.
Blaser and colleagues wanted to determine if
the metabolic changes are driven by how the
antibiotics altered the animal’s microbiome, and
they turned to mice to investigate the link.
Blaser and his team gave a low dose of penicillin to
mice during the first 4 or 8 weeks after birth and
analyzed their gut microbiota and several metabolic
characteristics.
As expected, penicillin changed the animals’
gut microbiota by reducing the numbers of
lactobacilli and several other species that are
believed to be beneficial.
But this effect disappeared within a couple of
weeks of the last antibiotic dose.
Ten weeks later, however, treated mice that ate
high-fat diets started gaining weight like mad, the
team reports today in Cell.
Females were particularly vulnerable: They added
twice as much body fat as did their untreated female
cousins that ate the same high-fat diet.
Mice dosed with antibiotics that fed on normal diets
did not gain weight, nor did older mice that
received antibiotics.
To find out whether the mice’s disturbed microbiomes
or the antibiotic itself caused the metabolic
changes, the team transplanted microbes from treated
mice into mice previously kept completely germ-free.
The recipients immediately began gaining weight when
put on a high-fat diet, suggesting that the altered
cast of microbiomes was responsible for the
metabolic changes.
Meanwhile, germ-free mice given the gut
microbes of untreated mice did not gain weight.
“This is a very good study because it moves beyond
correlations and proves causality,” says
microbiologist Willem de Vos of Wageningen
University in the Netherlands, who was not involved
in the study. Jeremy Nicholson, a biomolecular
scientist at Imperial College London, adds that the
study reveals that changes to the overall physiology
of organisms may indeed result from relatively small
disruptions of the gut microbiome, “which might have
major long-term health outcomes.”
De Vos cautions against jumping to conclusions about
what the study means for humans, whose guts contain
very different bacteria than do those of mice.
Moreover, he adds, “you would never give a
child a low dose of antibiotics for a long period.
You want to know the impact of repetitive, short
treatments with a high dosage.” Also, future studies
will have to measure the impact of different
antibiotics, rather than just penicillin, he says.
Blaser agrees that more work needs to be done, but
he is confident that a connection between early life
antibiotic use and obesity will eventually be
confirmed in humans.
“A lot of work on obesity has been focused on diet
and calories.
That has not been sufficient to explain the obesity
epidemic,” Blaser says. Antibiotics could be a
missing piece of the puzzle.
Israeli teenagers: Racist and proud of it
Ethnic hatred has become a basic element in the everyday
life of Israeli youth, a forthcoming book finds.
“For me, personally, Arabs are something I can’t look at
and can’t stand,” a 10th-grade girl from a high school in
the central part of the country says in abominable Hebrew.
“I am tremendously racist. I come from a racist home. If I
get the chance in the army to shoot one of them, I won’t
think twice. I’m ready to kill someone with my hands, and
it’s an Arab. In my...

Always on the side of the egg By Haruki Murakami
I have come to Jerusalem today as a novelist, which is to
say as a professional spinner of lies.
Of course, novelists are not the only ones who tell lies.
Politicians do it, too, as we all know. Diplomats and
military men tell their own kinds of lies on occasion, as
do used car salesmen, butchers and builders. The lies of
novelists differ from others, however, in that no one
criticizes the novelist as immoral for telling them.
Indeed, the bigger and better his lies and the more
ingeniously he creates them, the more he is likely to be
praised by the public and the critics. Why should that be?
My answer would be this: Namely, that by telling skillful
lies - which is to say, by making up fictions that appear
to be true - the novelist can bring a truth out to a new
location and shine a new light on it. In most cases, it is
virtually impossible to grasp a truth in its original form
and depict it accurately. This is why we try to grab its
tail by luring the truth from its hiding place,
transferring it to a fictional location, and replacing it
with a fictional form. In order to accomplish this,
however, we first have to clarify where the truth lies
within us. This is an important qualification for making
up good lies. Today, however, I have no intention of
lying. I will try to be as honest as I can. There are a
few days in the year when I do not engage in telling lies,
and today happens to be one of them.
So let me tell you the truth. A fair number of people
advised me not to come here to accept the Jerusalem Prize.
Some even warned me they would instigate a boycott of my
books if I came.
The reason for this, of course, was the fierce battle that
was raging in Gaza. The UN reported that more than a
thousand people had lost their lives in the blockaded Gaza
City, many of them unarmed citizens - children and old
people.
Any number of times after receiving notice of the award, I
asked myself whether traveling to Israel at a time like
this and accepting a literary prize was the proper thing
to do, whether this would create the impression that I
supported one side in the conflict, that I endorsed the
policies of a nation that chose to unleash its
overwhelming military power. This is an impression, of
course, that I would not wish to give. I do not approve of
any war, and I do not support any nation. Neither, of
course, do I wish to see my books subjected to a boycott.
Finally, however, after careful consideration, I made up
my mind to come here. One reason for my decision was that
all too many people advised me not to do it. Perhaps, like
many other novelists, I tend to do the exact opposite of
what I am told. If people are telling me - and especially
if they are warning me - "don't go there," "don't do
that," I tend to want to "go there" and "do that." It's in
my nature, you might say, as a novelist. Novelists are a
special breed. They cannot genuinely trust anything they
have not seen with their own eyes or touched with their
own hands.
And that is why I am here. I chose to come here rather
than stay away. I chose to see for myself rather than not
to see. I chose to speak to you rather than to say
nothing.
This is not to say that I am here to deliver a political
message. To make judgments about right and wrong is one of
the novelist's most important duties, of course.
It is left to each writer, however, to decide upon the
form in which he or she will convey those judgments to
others. I myself prefer to transform them into stories -
stories that tend toward the surreal. Which is why I do
not intend to stand before you today delivering a direct
political message.
Please do, however, allow me to deliver one very personal
message. It is something that I always keep in mind while
I am writing fiction. I have never gone so far as to write
it on a piece of paper and paste it to the wall: Rather,
it is carved into the wall of my mind, and it goes
something like this:
"Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against
it, I will always stand on the side of the egg."
Yes, no matter how right the wall may be and how wrong the
egg, I will stand with the egg. Someone else will have to
decide what is right and what is wrong; perhaps time or
history will decide. If there were a novelist who, for
whatever reason, wrote works standing with the wall, of
what value would such works be?
What is the meaning of this metaphor? In some cases, it is
all too simple and clear. Bombers and tanks and rockets
and white phosphorus shells are that high, solid wall. The
eggs are the unarmed civilians who are crushed and burned
and shot by them. This is one meaning of the metaphor.
This is not all, though. It carries a deeper meaning.
Think of it this way. Each of us is, more or less, an egg.
Each of us is a unique, irreplaceable soul enclosed in a
fragile shell. This is true of me, and it is true of each
of you. And each of us, to a greater or lesser degree, is
confronting a high, solid wall. The wall has a name: It is
The System. The System is supposed to protect us, but
sometimes it takes on a life of its own, and then it
begins to kill us and cause us to kill others - coldly,
efficiently, systematically.
I have only one reason to write novels, and that is to
bring the dignity of the individual soul to the surface
and shine a light upon it. The purpose of a story is to
sound an alarm, to keep a light trained on The System in
order to prevent it from tangling our souls in its web and
demeaning them. I fully believe it is the novelist's job
to keep trying to clarify the uniqueness of each
individual soul by writing stories - stories of life and
death, stories of love, stories that make people cry and
quake with fear and shake with laughter. This is why we go
on, day after day, concocting fictions with utter
seriousness.
My father died last year at the age of 90. He was a
retired teacher and a part-time Buddhist priest. When he
was in graduate school, he was drafted into the army and
sent to fight in China. As a child born after the war, I
used to see him every morning before breakfast offering up
long, deeply-felt prayers at the Buddhist altar in our
house. One time I asked him why he did this, and he told
me he was praying for the people who had died in the war.
He was praying for all the people who died, he said, both
ally and enemy alike. Staring at his back as he knelt at
the altar, I seemed to feel the shadow of death hovering
around him.
My father died, and with him he took his memories,
memories that I can never know. But the presence of death
that lurked about him remains in my own memory. It is one
of the few things I carry on from him, and one of the most
important.
I have only one thing I hope to convey to you today. We
are all human beings, individuals transcending nationality
and race and religion, fragile eggs faced with a solid
wall called The System. To all appearances, we have no
hope of winning. The wall is too high, too strong - and
too cold. If we have any hope of victory at all, it will
have to come from our believing in the utter uniqueness
and irreplaceability of our own and others' souls and from
the warmth we gain by joining souls together.
Take a moment to think about this. Each of us possesses a
tangible, living soul. The System has no such thing. We
must not allow The System to exploit us. We must not allow
The System to take on a life of its own. The System did
not make us: We made The System.
That is all I have to say to you.
I am grateful to have been awarded the Jerusalem Prize. I
am grateful that my books are being read by people in many
parts of the world. And I am glad to have had the
opportunity to speak to you here today.

LONDON, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- British Chancellor of the
Exchequer George Osborne announced Friday that the British
government intend to issue a Renminbi denominated bond and
to use the proceeds to finance the government's reserves
of foreign currency.
"I can now announce that the UK government intend to be
the first national government outside of China to issue a
bond in China's currency. We issued bonds in U.S. dollar
before, now we will be issuing a bond in RMB," said
Osborne in the press release of the Sixth China-UK
Economic and Financial Dialogue (EFD).
Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai and Osborne concluded the
meeting of the Sixth China-UK Economic and Financial
Dialogue in London.
Osborne described this dialogue outcome as "a historic
moment" and a statement of British confidence in the
potential of the RMB to become "the main global reserves
currency".
"And let me be clear, as China becomes a bigger and bigger
part of the world economy, their currency is going to be
used around the world. We here in Britain understand that,
and we want us to be the first country in the west to
seize the opportunities that it will bring," declared
Osborne.
Meanwhile, the issuance of Chinese currency bond means
jobs and investment in Britain, which the government's
long-term economic plan is all about, noted Osborne.

Hitachi Class 800
trainsets begin testing in Japan 12 Sep 2014
UK: The first of three pre-series Class 800
intercity trainsets ordered under the Department for
Transport’s Intercity Express Programme has begun
low-speed running trials on the test track at
Hitachi’s Kasado factory in Japan.
The first of the three bi-mode sets is expected to
arrive in Britain early next year for trials on the
East Coast Main Line, although Hitachi is discussing
the possibility of using the Old Dalby test track.
A set of full-size vehicle mock-ups at industrial
premises near Warwick has now been seen by more than
2 000 ‘stakeholders’ as the final part of an
iterative process to finalise the design details
well before the trains enter commercial service. Put
together by DCA Design International, the mock-ups
consist of a cab segment and sections of two cars
with the interiors fashioned to replicate all the
different areas of the TSI-compliant interior.
The cab is based on that of the Class 395 supplied
by Hitachi for Southeastern services on High Speed
1, with some changes made following consultation
with staff. Provision has also been made for
driver-only operation.
The catering area is located at the outer end of one
end car behind the cab and equipment area. A
separate entrance and vestibule behind the cab is
provided for catering staff. Hitachi says four
catering levels are possible, but the DfT
specification only covers Levels 1 and 4. Level 1 is
a full galley, Level 2 would be a mix of a shop and
buffet, Level 3 would be a larger shop, and Level 4
is a trolley.
A distinctive feature of the bi-mode trains will be
the difference in floor heights between cars with
and without diesel engines; the higher floor of cars
with underfloor engines requires a transition slope
at the end of the car, which may surprise passengers
expecting a level passage between cars. A nine-car
set will have five coaches with underfloor engines
supplied by MTU, and a five-car will have three. The
Class 801 electric trainsets will also have one
underfloor diesel powerpack to provide emergency
power instead of relying on back-up batteries.
The United States launched
several airstrikes against ISIS targets inside Syria
for the first time late Monday in what a defense
official said was a "successful" start in a new front
in the battle against the terror group and,
separately, in potentially averting an imminent threat
to the homeland from a shadowy al Qaeda group.
While the United States is
still "assessing the effectiveness" of the bombing
campaign against ISIS, which included up to 20
targets, the Pentagon believes “that we were
successful in hitting what we were aiming at,”
Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
"We took out
command-and-control facilities, supply depots, some
training areas, some vehicles and trucks, that kind of
thing. Mainly, what we were going after was this
group" s="" ability="" to="" sustain="" itself,=""
resource="" itself="" and="" to,="" frankly,=""
command="" control="" lead="" their="" forces,”=""
kirby="" told="" “good="" morning="" america,”=""
referring="" isis.="" <="" p="" scrolling="no">
Many of the targets were in
and around Raqqa, Syria, believed to be an ISIS
stronghold, a defense official said Monday. Several
Arab nations took part in the U.S.-led operation:
Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the United
Arab Emirates, the U.S. military's Central Command
said early today.
Separately, the U.S. military
unilaterally launched eight strikes against the Khorasan
Group, a little-known al Qaeda cell that Kirby
said was “plotting and planning imminent attacks
against Western targets to include the U.S. homeland.”
“It was on that basis that we
struck targets, Khorasan targets, inside Syria. We
believe the individuals [who] were plotting and
planning it have been eliminated and we’re going to
continue, as I said, to assess the effectiveness of
our strikes going through today,” he said.
In a national address Sept. 10,
President Obama said the first part of his strategy to
counter ISIS was to "conduct a systematic campaign of
airstrikes against these terrorists."
"Moreover, I have made it
clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten
our country, wherever they are. That means I will not
hesitate to take action against ISIL [ISIS] in Syria
as well as Iraq," Obama said. "This is a core
principle of my presidency: If you threaten America,
you will find no safe haven."
The stealth F-22 Raptor took
part in the mission, a U.S. defense official said,
marking the first time the pricey,
controversial aircraft has been used in a combat
operation.
In recent weeks, a
self-described ISIS militant is believed to have
killed two Americans on camera -- journalists James
Foley and Steven Sotloff -- as well a British
aid worker. The group is suspected of holding at least
two more Americans and has publicly threatened a
second Briton.
As of earlier today, the U.S.
had launched nearly 200 strikes against ISIS in Iraq.
U.S. Ambassador to the United
Nations Samantha Power Sunday told ABC News' "This
Week" America would not conduct airstrikes in Syria
alone. But already Secretary of State John Kerry
claimed that some 40 countries, including a number of
Arab nations, have offered various levels of support
to the anti-ISIS effort. France announced last week it
would join in airstrikes in the battle against ISIS.

ISIS, the Islamic State of
Iraq and Syria, is the name taken in 2013 by what was
originally an al Qaeda affiliate called al Qaeda in
Iraq (AQI). In 2011, AQI moved into Syria, taking
advantage of the country's civil war to gain power and
recruits.
By 2013, ISIS leader Abu Bakr
al-Baghdadi had spread his group's influence back into
Iraq and changed the group's name to ISIS, "reflecting
its greater regional ambitions," according to the
State Department.
The group, which is no longer
affiliated with al Qaeda after a public falling out
earlier this year, is believed to have up to 30,000
members, including thousands of foreign recruits,
hundreds of them Westerners. Using brutal tactics
including the alleged mass execution of civilians and
captured soldiers, the terror group has been able to
control territory in Syria and cut a swath through
Iraq.
ISIS, as the group has been
identified by ABC News and other news organizations,
refers to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
Different translations of the Arabic name al-Baghdadi
gave his organization have spawned other
English-language versions, such as the Islamic State
of Iraq and al-Sham (also ISIS) or the Islamic State
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

USA: JR East is to lead a Japanese
consortium in bidding for railway
systems contracts for the Los Angeles –
San Francisco high speed line now being
developed by the California High Speed
Rail Authority.
JR East announced in Tokyo that it
expects to work in partnership with six
other firms in an effort to export
Japanese Shinkansen technology to the
USA.
While the prime focus if the consortium
would be rolling stock,
JR East is also understood to be
targeting the supply of signalling
equipment.
The group also reportedly believes that
Japan’s experience of building and
operating high speed lines through areas
prone to seismic activity could be
attractive to CHSRA.
JR East was a founder member of the
Japan California HSR Consortium, which
was launched in July 2012, along with
Sumitomo Corp, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries, Mitsubishi Corp, Nippon
Shryo and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
Tenders for the supply of an initial
batch of around 25 high speed trainsets
are expected to be issued by the end of
the year. Land clearance work is already
underway on the first 47 km of the 480
km Initial Operating Section through
California’s Central Valley. CHSRA
intends to offer a ‘one seat ride’
between San Francisco and Los Angeles
from 2028 under the $68bn programme.

First Series H5 Shinkansen train set
arrives in Hokkaido
14 Oct 2014
JAPAN: The first Series H5 trainset for
the Hokkaido Shinkansen was delivered to
the island on October 13. A welcoming
ceremony was held at Haldane Harbour
before the vehicles were transferred by
road to JR Hokkaido’s Nanae depot.
Built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in
Kobe, the trainset had been shipped via
the Sea of Japan because of prevailing
typhoon conditions along the Pacific
coast.
Intended to operate through services
from Hakodate to Tokyo when the first
section of the Hokkaido Shinkansen opens
in December 2016, the four 10-car Series
H5 units ordered earlier this year are
clones of the JR East Series E5. Each
will be able to carry up to 731
passengers: 18 GranClass, 55 Green Car
and 658 standard.
Fitted with full active suspensions, the
Series H5 will be able to operate at up
to 320 km/h on the Tohoku Shinkansen,
and run in multiple with Series E5, E6
and E3 units. Maximum speed on the
Hokkaido Shinkansen will be
260 km/h, but the trains will be
limited to 140 km/h on the
dual-gauge tracks through the Seikan
Tunnel.
Tracklaying is due to be completed next
month on the 148·9 km first phase of the
line, from Shin-Aomori to Hakodate,
which was authorised for construction in
April 2005. This will serve three
stations, at Oku-Tsugaru-Imabetsu in
northern Honshu plus Kikonai and
Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in southern
Hokkaido.
Work is expected to start next year on
the 211 km extension to Sapporo, which
was approved for construction by the
government on June 29. Whereas JR
Hokkaido’s principal trains between
Hakodate and Sapporo currently operate
via the Muroran Main Line and Chitose
Line, which have gentle gradients as
they follow the coast, the high speed
line will parallel the Hakodate Main
Line which takes a more direct route but
steeply graded route through the hills.
Due to be completed by 2035, it will
have intermediate stations at
Shin-Yakumo, Oshamanbe, Kucchian and
Shin-Otaru.

7:51 P.M. Islamic State insurgents
advance into Iraqi town of Qara Tappa
Islamic State militants advanced on
the Iraqi town of Qara Tappa on Monday
disguised as Kurdish peshmerga
fighters, Kurdish security sources
said. They seized two Kurdish villages
after surprising the Kurdish fighters
before launching the attack on Qara
Tappa, 120 km (75 miles) north of
Baghdad, seeking to expand their
territory and heap pressure on Kurdish
forces in disputed areas.
"The terrorists were wearing peshmerga
uniforms and this tactic helped them
to easily infiltrate our defenses near
Qara Tappa," a peshmerga officer said
on condition of anonymity.
Reinforcements were sent from the
Kurdish-controlled city of Khanaqin to
repel the insurgents and prevent the
town of Qara Tappa from falling, the
sources said.
Qara Tappa is a mixed area of Sunni
Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen that came
under Kurdish control when Iraqi Kurds

7:40 P.M. Islamic State oil output was
$2m/day before air strikes
Islamic State militants were producing
about $2 million worth of crude oil
per day in Iraq and Syria before
recent U.S.-led air strikes, possibly
more than double the amount heard in
U.S. congressional testimony last
month, the research firm IHS said on
Monday.
The group of Sunni extremists
controlled as much as 350,000 barrels
per day of crude oil, but was able to
produce only about 50,000 bpd to
60,000 bpd, said IHS, a provider of
global market and economic
information.
"This fraction of pre-war capacity is
the result of warfare, shut-ins and
(Islamic State's) limited technical
prowess operating the fields," IHS
said in a paper called "Spoils of War:
Who's in charge of what oil resources
in the conflict zones of northern Iraq
and Syria." (Reuters)
7:26 P.M. IAEA: Iran
acts to meet terms of extended
nuclear deal with powers
Iran has taken further action to
comply with the terms of an extended
interim nuclear agreement with six
world powers, a monthly U.N. atomic
agency update on the accord's
implementation showed on Monday. The
report by the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), seen by Reuters,
said Iran had diluted more than 4,100
kg of low enriched uranium down to the
level of natural uranium. Refined
uranium can be used to fuel nuclear
power plants, Iran's declared goal,
but can also provide the fissile core
of a nuclear bomb if processed much
further, which the West fears may be
the country's ultimate aim. (Reuters)
7:19 P.M. EU's Ashton to
stay on until end of Iran nuclear
talks
European Union foreign policy chief
Catherine Ashton said on Monday she
will continue leading nuclear
negotiations with Iran until a deal is
reached but is determined to meet a
November deadline for an accord.
Her five-year term as EU foreign
policy chief ends on Oct, 31, and she
had said she would stay on as nuclear
negotiator until Nov. 24, the deadline
for reaching a long-term settlement
with Iran over its nuclear programme.
Asked if she would continue beyond
that date if necessary, she told
reporters at an EU foreign ministers'
meeting in Luxembourg: "I have been
asked to carry on until it's done."

6:56 P.M. Joining conflicts abroad to
be made a crime in Germany
Germany is to make it a crime for its
residents to join conflicts abroad, a
move aimed at cutting off the flow of
recruits to the Islamic State, the
country's justice minister said
Monday.
Prosecutors disclosed Monday that two
more men were in detention for sending
money, boots and uniforms to Islamists
in Syria, adding that the suspects
head been arrested during nationwide
raids Saturday.
Previously two arrests had been
announced. The new disclosure by the
prosecutors brought the tally of
arrests to four, all of whom are
likely to be charged with supporting
foreign terrorist organizations.
The new cases involve a 40-year-old
German national of Moroccan descent
and a 31-year-old Lebanese national.
They are accused of sending aid to the
Islamic State and to another movement
in Syria, Ahrar al-Sham.
Justice Minister Heiko Maas said the
government would propose legislation
to parliament to institute two new
crimes.
Departing from the Germany with the
intention to commit grave acts of
violence abroad or to seek training
for such acts would be made an
offence. He said this would implement
a UN Security Council resolution
urging states to thwart recruitment
for terrorism.
Fundraising for terrorism would also
be made a crime. (DPA)
6:27 P.M. Iran military ready to ship
equipment to Lebanon
Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency
is quoting the country's defense
minister as saying Iran is ready to
ship defensive materials to Lebanon to
aid its army.
The Monday report quotes Gen. Ahmad
Dehghan as saying in order to thwart
extremists who plan to commit inhuman
crimes in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, "we
will provide an Iranian-made
consignment of defensive items to the
Lebanese army for their use in
fighting the group and other terrorist
groups."
The contents of the shipment were
unknown. The UN in 2007 banned Iran
from exporting and importing weapons.
Gen. Dehghan said the shipment now
awaited approval from Lebanon, a
country he described as having a
"special position" in Iran's foreign
policy. His remarks came during a
joint briefing with visiting Lebanese
Defense Minister Samir Moqbel.(AP)
5:36 P.M. Benghazi attack suspect
Khatallah pleads not guilty to 17 new
charges
Ahmed Abu Khatallah, a Libyan militant
accused of participating in the
September 2012 attack on the U.S.
diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya
pleaded not guilty on Monday to 17 new
charges related to the attack,
including some that carry the death
penalty.
Khatallah did not speak at the brief
hearing, but his lawyer entered the
plea on his behalf. (Reuters)
5:11 P.M. UN nuclear chief suggests
progress slow in Iran investigation
Iran has still not implemented all the
nuclear transparency measures it had
agreed to carry out by late August,
the head of the UN atomic energy
agency said on Monday, suggesting
little headway in an inquiry into
suspected bomb research.
Western officials say Iran must
cooperate more with United Nations
nuclear sleuths if it wants to settle
a protracted dispute with six world
powers over its nuclear program and be
rid of crippling financial sanctions.
Nearly two months after an Aug. 25
deadline for answering questions about
alleged activity that might be used to
develop atomic arms, the head of the
International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) made clear that Iran had not
yet fully done so.
"In order to resolve all outstanding
issues, it is very important that Iran
implements, in a timely manner, all
practical measures agreed under the
Framework for Cooperation," Yukiya
Amano said. That accord was reached
with Tehran last year to help advance
the long-running investigation.
Addressing a conference at IAEA
headquarters on nuclear safeguards, he
said the UN agency was not in a
position "to provide credible
assurance about the absence of
undeclared nuclear material and
activities in Iran". (Reuters)
4:57 P.M. Lebanon imposes new measures
against Ebola
Lebanon is imposing new measures to
prevent the Ebola virus from reaching
the Middle Eastern nation, the health
minister said Monday.
Wael Abu Faour said Lebanon is more
vulnerable than some other Arab
countries because of the large
Lebanese diaspora in Africa. Thousands
of Lebanese live in African nations
including Guinea, Liberia and Sierra
Leone ― countries where the disease
has killed more than 4,500 people
combined.
People traveling to Lebanon from
infected countries will have to fill
out special forms and any incoming
plane carrying someone displaying
Ebola symptoms will have all
passengers tested at the airport, Abu
Faour told reporters on Monday.
A state hospital in Beirut has been
equipped with a quarantine unit for
Ebola patients, and the American
University Medical Center will have a
similar unit ready soon, he said.
In addition, anyone suspected of
carrying the virus will not be granted
a visa at Lebanese embassies in
infected countries. (AP)
4:54 P.M. U.S. reports 12 air strikes
against Islamic State in Syria, Iraq
The U.S. military conducted six air
strikes against Islamic State
militants near the Syrian border town
of Kobani on Sunday and Monday, the
U.S. Central Command said in a
statement.
U.S. forces, in coordination with
Iraqi ground troops, also conducted
six air strikes against the militant
group in Iraq near Fallujah and Bayji
with help from France and the United
Kingdom, Central Command said.

3:57 P.M. Vatican warns of 'new
genocide' by Islamic State
The Vatican has demanded that world
governments do more to prevent a
possible "new genocide" in northern
Iraq and Syria, and for Muslim leaders
in particular to repudiate the Islamic
State militants who are killing and
exiling the region's Christians.
Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro
Parolin told a special meeting of
cardinals Monday that beyond a
military response, governments must
provide more humanitarian aid for
refugees and address the core causes
of the conflict: the flow of weapons
to the region and instability stemming
from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Parolin also said Catholic leaders are
particularly alarmed that western
governments are offering visas to
persecuted religious minorities. He
said these Christians must be
encouraged to stay in the region and
be given security guarantees so they
can return home. (AP)
3:45 P.M. Iraq: Car bombings kill 16
people in Karbala
Iraqi officials say three car bombings
in the revered Shi'ite shrine city of
Karbala have killed at least 16
people.
A police officer said Monday that the
explosives-laden cars were parked in
commercial areas and parking lots near
government offices. He says 41 others
were wounded in the explosions.
A medical official confirmed the
casualty figures. Both officials spoke
on condition of anonymity as they were
not authorized to talk to media.
Karbala is home to two revered Shi'ite
saints and is located about 90
kilometers (55 miles) south of
Baghdad.
The attacks came hours after a suicide
bomber blew himself up among Shiite
worshippers as they were leaving a
mosque in a commercial area in central
Baghdad, killing at least 17 people.

3:39 P.M. Kerry: 'Irresponsible'
not to aid Kurds against IS
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
said Monday the Obama administration
decided to airdrop weapons and
ammunitions to "valiant" Kurds
fighting Islamic State extremists in
the Syrian border town of Kobani
because it would be "irresponsible"
and "morally very difficult" not to
support them.
Speaking in the Indonesian capital,
Kerry told reporters that the
administration understood ally
Turkey's concerns about supplying the
Kurds, who are linked to a Kurdish
group that Ankara fiercely opposes.

1:51 P.M. Iran arrests four suspected
of throwing acid on women
Iran's state media is reporting
authorities have arrested four people
suspected of throwing acid on women.
A string of acid attacks against at
least two women in the central city of
Isfahan last week has prompted a loud
public outcry. Now Iran's official
IRNA news agency reports that four men
are in custody. The report doesn't
reveal the identities of the suspects
or their possible motives. However,
local speculation centers on the
possibility that the attackers
believed the targeted women weren't
dressing modestly enough.
Under Iranian law, women in public
must cover themselves with an
enveloping head-to-toe veil. (AP)
1:35 P.M. Germany arrests two
suspected supporters of Islamic State,
Syrian rebel organization
German prosecutors say they've
detained two more people following
weekend raids on suspected supporters
of the Islamic State group and an
ultraconservative Syrian rebel
organization, Ahrar al-Sham.
Two suspected IS supporters were
arrested in western Germany Saturday.
Authorities searched the homes of 13
more people suspected of links to the
two groups.
Federal prosecutors said Monday that
one of those people, a German-Moroccan
dual national identified only as
Mounir R., has now been taken into
custody over accusations he provided
IS with clothing worth 1,100 euros
($1,400) and transferred 1,000 euros
to an IS member in Syria. They say he
planned to leave for Syria soon
himself.
Lebanese national Kassem El R. also
was arrested, accused of organizing
the delivery of military clothing and
boots to Ahrar al-Sham. (AP)
1:33 P.M. Suicide bombing kills at
least 17 at Baghdad Shi'ite mosque
Iraqi officials say a suicide bomber
has targeted a Shi'ite mosque in
central Baghdad, killing at least 17
worshipers.
A police officer says the attacker
blew up his explosives-laden vest as
people were leaving the al-Khairat
mosque in Baghdad's Sinak commercial
area following noon prayers on Monday.
He says at least 25 people were
wounded in the explosion.
The attack comes a day after a suicide
bombing targeted a Shiite mosque in
the capital's western Harithiya
neighborhood, killing 28 worshipers.
A medical official confirmed the
casualty figures. Both officials spoke
on condition of anonymity as they were
not authorized to talk to media. (AP)
1:00 P.M. U.S. launches new air
strikes on Islamic State positions in
Kobani following overnight airdrops
Syrian activists say the U.S.-led
coalition has launched new airstrikes
on Islamic State positions in Kobani,
following overnight airdrops of
weapons to Kurdish fighters in the
Syrian border town.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory
for Human Rights says a "large amount
of weapons and ammunition" have
reached the main Kurdish militia in
the town, near the Syrian-Turkish
border.
The activists say there were five
airstrikes in Kobani, also known as
Ayn Arab. The Observatory and
Kobani-based activist Farhad Shami say
the airstrikes began Sunday night and
continued until early Monday.
The Observatory, which has activists
on the ground in Syria, says the
latest round of fighting between
Kurdish militiamen and extremists in
Kobani killed at least eight members
of the Islamic State group. (AP)

12:25 P.M. Turkey is facilitating the
transfer of Iraqi Kurdish fighters to
Kobani, Foreign Minister say
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet
Davutoglu said on Monday that
Turkey was facilitating the
passage of Iraqi Kurdish
peshmerga fighters to Kobani to aid
Syrian Kurds defending the town
against Islamic State militants.
Davutoglu, speaking at a news
conference, did not provide details on
the transfer of the fighters. Earlier,
the U.S. military said it had
air-dropped arms to the Syrian Kurds
in Kobani. (Reuters)
11:48 A.M. Saudi Arabia's biggest bank
pledges to convert to full-time
Islamic bank within five years
Saudi Arabia's biggest bank has
responded to criticism of its
operations from Islamic scholars by
pledging to convert itself into a
full-fledged Islamic bank within about
five years.
The decision, made as the bank
launches a $6 billion initial public
offer of its shares, the largest-ever
equity sale in the Arab world, shows
how Saudi Arabia's conservative brand
of Islam can have a big impact on
business decisions in the kingdom.
State-owned National Commercial Bank
(NCB) , which has about $116 billion
of assets, currently has a mixed
business - most of it conforms to
Islamic principles such as bans on
interest payments and pure monetary
speculation, but some of it involves
conventional banking. Some other banks
in Saudi Arabia are also mixed.
Last week some members of Saudi
Arabia's highest religious body, the
Council of Senior Scholars, said
investing in NCB's share offer was not
permissible because too much of its
business was non-Islamic. (Reuters)
11:25 A.M. Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric
backs PM's fight against Islamic State
Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric, Grand
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, has met with
the country's prime minister in a sign
of support for his newly-formed
government and its struggle against
the Islamic State extremist group.
State TV says the meeting between the
spiritual leader and Prime Minister
Haider al-Abadi was underway Monday
morning but provided no immediate
details.
The meeting has symbolic significance
because al-Sistani, believed to be 86
years old, has shunned all politicians
in the past years in protest of the
way they run the country.
Al-Sistani lives in the Shiite holy
city of Najaf, 160 kilometers (100
miles) south of Baghdad, and rarely
appears in public.
Al-Abadi's newly formed Cabinet is
striving to push the Islamic State
extremists out of the sprawling
territory they have seized in recent
months. (AP)
10:38 A.M. Syrian Kurds hope for more
aid following U.S. airdrops in Kobani
The main Syrian Kurdish armed group
defending the Syrian border town of
Kobani against an Islamic State
offensive hopes for more support after
the United States air-dropped arms to
its fighters for the first time, a
spokesman said on Monday. The U.S.
military said on Sunday C-130 aircraft
had delivered small arms, ammunition
and medical supplies provided by the
Kurdish authorities in Iraq.
"It will have a positive impact on the
course of military operations and
certainly we are still hoping for more
support," Redur Xelil told Reuters via
Skype. (Reuters)
10:14 A.M. Attacks at Afghan
checkpoints kill at least four troops
Officials say insurgents have attacked
several army checkpoints in eastern
and southern Afghanistan, killing at
least four troops and wounding several
people.
No one has claimed responsibility for
the attacks, which happened Sunday,
but the Taliban have stepped up
assaults on Afghan and NATO forces
ahead of the pullout of most foreign
combat troops by the end of the year.
Defense ministry spokesman Gen.
Mohammad Zahir Azimi said on Monday
that the four soldiers died in an
attack in the eastern province of
Logar, in the Charkh district. He says
scores of insurgents were killed in a
subsequent airstrike there.
In southern Uruzgan province,
spokesman Dost Mohammad Nayab says
insurgents attacked police checkpoints
in Gezab district. He says Afghan
forces suffered no casualties but that
four attackers were killed. (AP)
8:07 A.M. Obama gave Erdogan advance
notice of plans to airdrop arms to
Syrian Kurds
The United States gave Turkey advance
notice of its plans to deliver arms to
the Syrian Kurds, a group Turkey views
with deep distrust because of its
links to Turkish Kurds who have fought
a decades-long insurgency in which
40,000 people were killed.
"President Obama spoke to Erdogan
yesterday and was able to notify him
of our intent to do this and the
importance that we put on it," one
senior U.S. official told reporters.
"We understand the longstanding
Turkish concern with the range of
groups, including Kurdish groups, that
they have been engaged in conflict
with," he added. "However, our very
strong belief is that both the United
States and Turkey face a common enemy
in ISIL and that we need to act on an
urgent basis." (Reuters)
7:55 A.M. Large quantity of
ammunition, weapons reach Kurds in
Kobani
A large quantity of ammunition and
weapons has reached the Syrian town of
Kobani, Polat Can, a spokesman for
Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State
militants there, said on his Twitter
feed on Monday.
The U.S. Central Command said earlier
U.S. military aircraft air-dropped
weapons, ammunition and medical
supplies for Kurdish forces fighting
Islamic State militants near the
Syrian border town on Sunday night.
Shortly before announcing that
ammunition and weapons had reached the
town, the spokesman for Kurdish forces
had posted that he would soon be
releasing "good news."

3:40 A.M. Kerry in Indonesia seeking
Asian support against Islamic state
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
arrived in Indonesia for Joko Widodo's
presidential inauguration on Monday,
seeking more help from Southeast Asian
leaders in the U.S.-led effort against
Islamic State in the Middle East.
In a one-day stop in Jakarta, capital
of a country with the world's largest
Muslim population, Kerry plans
bilateral meetings with Widodo, the
prime ministers of neighbouring
Malaysia and Singapore, the Sultan of
Brunei, Australia's prime minister and
the foreign minister of the
Philippines.
Kerry walks across the tarmac during a
refueling stop in Muscat, Oman on his
way to Indonesia on October 19.
Senior officials of the U.S. State
Department said the talks would touch
on territorial disputes in the South
China Sea, where China's increasing
assertiveness is a worry to the United
States and its Asian allies and
partners, the fight to contain Ebola,
and a Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership
under negotiation.
But the priority would be to seek more
help in the U.S.-led fight against
Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the
officials, who declined to be
identified, told reporters on Kerry's
flight to Jakarta.
The discussions would cover ways to
block Islamic State recruitment of
fighters from Southeast Asia,
preventing the return of hardened
fighters to the region, and blocking
militant financing, one of the
officials said.
"The secretary will talk through areas
where we believe and hope individual
countries can do more," he said.
While Indonesian crackdowns after the
Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United
States, and an attack on the holiday
island of Bali the following year,
have weakened and dispersed militants
at home, a growing number of them have
left the country, and Malaysia, to
join Islamic State in the Middle East.
A second U.S. official said Kerry
would urge Widodo to do more to freeze
the assets of militants in line with
U.N. Financial Action Task Force
requirements.
"They've made some progress on that,"
he said. "The hope is that they will
make more and it's part of an ongoing
effort ... to encourage the
Indonesians to do all they need to do
to meet their obligations under the
U.N." (Reuters)
Scientists
trying to
develop vaccines
against Africa's
deadly Marburg
and Ebola
viruses are
reporting an
important
milestone, a new
type of vaccine
that prevents
the diseases in
monkeys.
Successfully
immunizing
monkeys is an
essential step
toward producing
human vaccines.
Two new
vaccines, one
for Marburg
and one for
Ebola, were
100 percent
effective in a
study of 12
macaques being
published
today in the
journal Nature
Medicine. Monkeys given
just one shot
of vaccine and
later injected
with a high
dose of virus
did not even
get sick.
Normally, all
the animals
would be
expected to
die.
The Marburg
and Ebola
viruses are
closely related,
and in both
people and
monkeys they
cause
hemorrhagic
fevers that can
be fatal within
a week. There is
no vaccine or
treatment for
either disease.
Death rates in
people can be
high, sometimes
exceeding 80 or
90 percent.
Angola, where a
Marburg epidemic
was first
detected in
March, is still
struggling to
contain the
disease, which
has killed 340
of 408 victims.
The virus is
spread by
contact with
blood, saliva,
vomit or other
fluids from sick
patients.
The two new
vaccines are
still
experimental,
and will not be
ready to be
tested in people
for at least two
years. If human
trials are
successful,
products might
be ready for
licensing five
or six years
from now, the
researchers
said. The
vaccines would
not be used for
routine
immunization,
but would be
given to health
workers in high
risk areas,
virus
researchers and
people who had
been exposed to
the disease,
such as
relatives and
others in close
contact with
sick patients.
Eventually, it
might be
possible to
combine the
vaccines to
protect people
from both
diseases with a
single shot.
The new vaccines
are not the
first to protect
monkeys. An
earlier one,
first proved in
2003, may go
into safety
studies in
people in the
United States
later this year.
Each vaccine has
its advocates,
and researchers
say it is
advantageous to
have several
candidates on
the horizon.
The work
described in
Nature Medicine
today was done
by scientists
from the United
States and
Canada, led by
Dr. Steven M.
Jones and Dr.
Heinz Feldmann
of the Public
Health Agency of
Canada in
Winnipeg, and
Dr. Thomas W.
Geisbert of the
United States
Army Medical
Research
Institute of
Infectious
Diseases in Fort
Detrick, Md.
Dr. Jones said
the goal of the
research was to
provide a
vaccine that
could be used to
stop outbreaks
like the one in
Angola or to
protect people
from germ
warfare. He and
other
researchers said
that governments
and the military
developed a
strong interest
in making
vaccines against
Ebola and
Marburg during
the 1990's after
a Soviet
defector said
that Russians
had stockpiled
the Marburg
virus,
weaponized it
and packed it
into warheads
for possible use
in attacks on
cities or
battlefields.
''Marburg and
Ebola are not as
significant
threats as
smallpox would
be, but one
could wreak
incredible human
health tragedies
in this country
and could
probably create
a huge economic
burden even if
the diseases
didn't spread
like wildfire,''
said Dr. Peter
B. Jahrling, an
author of the
article and an
expert on
viruses and
bioterrorism who
used to work for
the Department
of Defense and
is now a chief
scientist at the
National
Institute of
Allergy and
Infectious
Diseases, of the
National
Institutes of
Health. ''But I
think a lot of
people here also
see the
humanitarian
aspects of
providing
vaccine to
people who need
it.''
Dr. Cathy Roth,
head of the
emerging and
dangerous
pathogen team at
the World Health
Organization,
said: ''This
work is very
interesting,
very exciting
and very
promising.
There's a long
way to go before
this vaccine
could be put
into people. But
we really do
hope it is
pursued.''
To make the
vaccine, the
scientists used
another virus,
V.S.V., for
vesicular
stomatitis
virus, which
causes a mouth
disease in
cattle but
rarely infects
people. They
chose it because
it has a similar
genetic
structure to the
Marburg and
Ebola viruses,
and because
other
researchers have
had success with
it in developing
vaccines.
They altered
V.S.V. by
removing one of
its genes -- the
change makes it
harmless -- and
replacing it
with a gene from
either the
Marburg or Ebola
virus. The
transplanted
gene forced
V.S.V. to
produce Marburg
or Ebola
proteins on its
surface. The
proteins cannot
cause illness,
but they
provoked an
immune response
that protected
the animals.
The monkeys were
housed at a
high-level
biohazard
laboratory at
Fort Detrick,
where the
researchers,
wearing space
suits, watched
them intently
for signs of
illness after
they were
injected with
Marburg or
Ebola.
''By Day 6, I
have a very good
idea of whether
it's going to
work or not,''
Dr. Geisbert
said. ''On Day 6
I was feeling
really good. By
the time we get
to Day 10, if
the animals
haven't become
sick or had any
problems, we
pretty much know
it's worked. It
is an incredibly
good feeling.
All the people
on the team are
high-fiving. I
was
communicating
with Heinz and
Steven every
day, two and
three times a
day. 'How are
the monkeys? How
are the
monkeys?'''
As the team
pursues its
research, other
scientists are
moving ahead
with the
previously
developed Ebola
vaccine, based
on an
inactivated
version of
another type of
virus, an
adenovirus,
which can cause
common cold
symptoms in
people. That
vaccine, tested
in 2003, also
protected
monkeys, and
studies in
people may begin
this year.
Dr. Jahrling,
who has worked
on both types of
vaccine, said
the government
was paying for
both approaches
to cover its
bets. He said he
thought a
vaccine based on
an adenovirus
would be ready
before one based
on V.S.V.
''They've got a
runner on third
with that one,''
he said, ''and
the other guys
have a runner on
first.''
Dr. Jahrling
added: ''A
little
competition is
good. It
accelerates
everybody. If
nobody's behind
them they kind
of slow up.''
But Dr. Gary
Nabel, head of
the Vaccine
Research Center
at the N.I.H.
infectious
disease
institute, who
has been working
on the
adenovirus
vaccine, said:
''I don't look
at it as a race.
For me, the
adversary is the
virus and
whatever gives
us the best
opportunity to
defeat the virus
is what we need
to go with.''

published Thursday by Hebrew daily Haaretz incited
international controversy with its depiction of Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu piloting a plane labeled
"Israel" toward a tower flying the American flag, intended
to evoke the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the
World Trade Center.
Amos Biderman, the artist who authored the comic, told The
Times of Israel the image was intended to imply Netanyahu
is leading the country to "a disaster in Israel-US
relations on the scale of 9/11," pointing to the Prime
Minister's "arrogance" and his handling of settlement
construction in Jerusalem as poor diplomacy.
The cartoon was composed and published in response to an
article in The Atlantic Tuesday that quoted an anonymous
source inside the White House as calling Netanyahu a
"chicken[expletive]" criticizing the Prime Minister as
"cowardly" for his handling of relations with Palestine.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said those
comments do not reflect the administration's views on
Israel and Netanyahu defended himself during a public
appearance the following day, saying he is concerned with
Israeli interests.
Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Israel have been
deteriorating in recent years as Israel has struggled and
at times failed to navigate its troubled relationship with
Palestine without alienating the international community.
The announcement of plans to construct a settlement of
1000 homes for Israelis in a section of Jerusalem
considered territory claimed by Palestinians against the
Obama administration's objections further strained
relations already fraught with tension.
Despite its timeliness, however, Biderman's lampoon was
not well received on social media, with commenters calling
the comic "tasteless" and "revolting" and "filth."

Japan's ruling party accused of shying
from election questions By AFP

11:13 GMT, 28 November 2014
The ruling party of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
will not send anyone to speak at a foreign
journalists' club before the general election, a
spokesman admitted Friday, sparking accusations it is
shying away from tough questions.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said it has been
unable to find anyone among its senior ranks who can
represent the party at the Foreign Correspondents'
Club of Japan (FCCJ) ahead of the December 14 poll.
The FCCJ, a fee-paying club mainly aimed at foreign
journalists, regularly hosts press conferences and
events to which key figures in the world of politics,
academia or entertainment are invited.
The gatherings can be rambunctious, with subjects
sometimes facing more aggressive questioning than they
do at the hands of domestic journalists, who, by
Western standards, tend to pull their punches.
As a result, the FCCJ's press conferences frequently
make news in Japan, where television and newspapers
use the prism of foreign press to examine issues they
may feel uncomfortable tackling head on.
- Recent mauling -
McNeill, who writes for The Economist and the Irish
Times, said club members could not remember an
election when the LDP did not send a senior official
to speak to global media.
"We are very upset that they have broken the
tradition," he said, adding: "The reasons that they
have given for not coming are a disappointment. If it
was the case that they were busy, we could have
discussed it."
The suspicion, he says, is that the party is wary
after the mauling a cabinet minister got in a recent
appearance, when she was repeatedly pressed on her
links to right wing groups.
The LDP denied it was avoiding the foreign press
corps, and insisted it was simply a matter of
scheduling.
"We appreciate such an opportunity to speak at the
FCCJ at a normal time, but we are now in the middle of
the election battle," an LDP spokesman told AFP.
"Prime Minister Abe has spoken at the FCCJ in the
past, even if not in the capacity of prime minister.
But he is now on the campaign trail across the
country," he said.
Japan goes to the polls next month, less than two
years after Abe swept to power on a wave of optimism
over his plan to reinvigorate the soggy economy.
He has said he needs the public's seal of approval for
his plan to put off a sales tax rise, but commentators
suggest the election, which will cost the public purse
$500 million, is more an exercise consolidating his
grip on power.

The origin of the mysterious bangs heard across the UK and
New York at the weekend are yet to be officially identified.
But a leading theory is that they were created by an
aircraft possibly travelling at supersonic or hypersonic
speeds above the Atlantic.
This has led conspiracy theorists to attribute the booms to
a spy plane rumoured to be under development by the US
military, under the codename Aurora.
Aurora is rumoured to be a top secret aircraft that has been
in development since 1989. These claims originated in
Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine in 1989. In
November 2013, Lockheed Martin announced it was developing a
similar SR-72 spy plane (illustrated) said to be able to
accelerate up to Mach 6
Dr Bhupendra Khandelwal, an engineering research associate
from Sheffield, claims the loud bangs were created by a type
of experimental jet engine called a pulse detonation
engine.
Claudia Angiletta, a resident from Croydon, South London,
recorded the sounds as she was watching TV at home at around
10pm GMT on Saturday.
Within minutes, Twitter users had started spreading
hashtags - from the straightforward #loudbangs to the
somewhat melodramatic #omgwereallgoingtodie.
At around the same time, residents in locations including
Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Clarence and as far north as Niagara
Falls on the east coast of the US also took to social
media to report the unusual noises.

Twitter user Brailsford believes the noises were
created by hypersonic booms (tweets pictured above). He
added that the continuous and odd sound could be explained
by reverberations around the stratosphere
Enthusiasts claim that such a supersonic or
hypersonic plans could be what caused the strange noises
at the weekend. In particular, an expert said the sound is
similar to that created by pulse detonation engines. An
artist's illustration of what the Aurora plane could look
like is pictured

People described it as loud enough to shake their homes and
rattle windows.
This has led conspiracy theorists to claim the power source
could be behind a hypersonic US spy plane, dubbed Aurora.

has been in development since 1989.

THE AURORA RUMOURS
Aurora is rumoured to be a top secret aircraft that has
been in development since 1989.
It could be a successor to the Mach 3.35 Lockheed Martin
SR-71 Blackbird craft that was retired in 1998.
By comparison, extreme reports claim the Aurora could hit
up to Mach 11.8.
These claims originated in Aviation Week & Space
Technology magazine, which ran an article in 1989 about a
a mysterious entry in the 1985 US budget.
The entry said $445 million was attributed to 'black
aircraft production' under the name Aurora.
These reports did not reference a single craft, instead
they discussed a series of planes.
Other reports suggest the Aurora programme kicked off at
Lockheed Martin's Skunkworks in 1987.
The firm was said to be looking into replacing its SR-71
Blackbird.
In November 2013, Lockheed Martin announced it was
developing for its SR-72 spy plane.
It said the plane can accelerate up to Mach 6, or 4,567mph
(7,349km/h) - three times faster than Concorde.

However, the former head of Lockheed's Skunkworks division,
Ben Rich, said Aurora was a codename for the stealth project
which eventually led to the B-2 Spirit.
But, in November 2013, Lockheed Martin announced it was
developing a spy plane with similar technologies called
SR-72.
The firm said the plane can accelerate up to Mach 6, or
4,567mph (7,349km/h) - three times faster than Concorde.
Concorde flew no faster than Mach 2, primarily because the
materials weren’t available in the Sixties that could
withstand greater heat.
Technology has advanced since then, and the SR-72 will be a
so-called ‘warm structure’ - it will heat up rather than
reflect the heat using the sort of ceramic tiles that
covered the Space Shuttle.
Concorde wasn’t allowed to fly supersonic over land because
of the ‘sonic boom’ - the sound associated with the
shockwaves created by a craft moving faster than the speed
of sound.

A PDE engine works by using force from a series of
explosions, caused by mixing a fuel mist and air intake, to
thrust itself forward. It can theoretically power planes at
five times the speed of sound. A PDE can detonate between 60
and 100 times a second and its contrails appear to look like
'rings on a rope' (pictured), or a spine
According to experts, including Dr Phillip Atcliffe, senior
lecturer in aeronautical engineering at Salford University,
if a passenger jet flew at Mach 6 at current jet altitudes
of around 30,000ft (9,144 metres), the sonic boom could
damage buildings.
Officials routinely deny Aurora exists. But that has not
dampened the spirits of the theorists, who point to a
sighting of a mysterious triangular object by a North Sea
oil engineer in August 1989.
Dr Khandelwal was keen to distance himself from the world of
conspiracy theories, though he conceded there could always
some things unknown to the public.
‘Of course we can’t know for sure if someone else could have
the technology already,' he said.
Dr Khandelwal, is among a team of scientists working on the
technology behind such types of 'pulse detonation engine'.
'It makes the same kind of pulsing sound as the one on this
audio,' he told MailOnline.
WHAT WOULD AN
AURORA PLANE LOOK LIKE?
Speed: Speeds are reported to be in the range of Mach 5 to
8.
Length: 110ft (33.5 metres)
Wingspan: 60ft (18.2 metres)
Engine: There are a number of possible engine technologies
that have been linked to the Aurora project.
In November 2013, Lockheed Martin announced it was
developing for its SR-72 spy plane (pictured) said to be
able to accelerate up to Mach 6
One in particular, which Dr Bhupendra Khandelwal an
engineering research associate from Sheffield believes may
have caused the booms heard over the UK and New York, is
called a pulse detonation engine (PDE), or pulse detonation
wave engine (PDWE).
At regular speeds, the craft would be powered by a
traditional jet engines built into the lower fuselage.
Once it hits supersonic speed, the PDE takes over.
A PDE works by sending liquid methane or liquid hydrogen
into the engine. The fuel mist is then ignited.
This detonation is made inside a specially designed chamber
and occurs when the aircraft is travelling beyond the speed
of sound.
At these speeds, a 'thrust wall' is created.
This is when the craft is travelling so fast, air is pushed
near the nose that creates a 'wall'.
When the detonation occurs, the aircraft's thrust wall is
pushed forward, and this is repeated numerous times to
propel the aircraft forward.
Alternatively, pulsejets could compress the air caused as
the craft travels forward to make it more streamline, while
fuel is ignited in a combustion chamber.
The pressure of the expanding gases in this chamber then
propel the jet forward.
Weapons: Rumours claim the Aurora may be equipped with
air-to-ground weapons, but this would add weight to the
craft, suggesting it is more likely that the plane would be
used to reach destinations and reconnaissance missions
instead. ‘When we run a
test engine it’s a real industrial noise and you can hear it
for miles. We have people coming to us asking to make less
noise or keep it to the daytime.'
A PDE engine works by using the force from a series of
explosions, caused by mixing a fuel mist and air intake, to
thrust itself forward. It can theoretically power planes at
five times the speed of sound.
The technology builds upon 'pulsejet' principles which first
emerged in the early 1900s and were used in German V-1
flying bombs.
Test flights using the most recent forms of the technology
have lasted only a few seconds, but it is still listed by
conspiracy theorists as a possible way of powering the
so-called Aurora spy jet.
Concorde flew no faster than Mach 2, mainly because the
materials weren’t available in the Sixties that could
withstand greater heat. Technology has advanced, and the
SR-72 (engine details pictured) will be a so-called ‘warm
structure’ - that will heat up rather than reflect the heat Steven Aftergood,
a government secrecy expert at the Federation of American
Scientists, said: 'If an aircraft is responsible, then it’s
worth noting that it may not be local at all.
'Because the sound wave that causes the boom can be
reflected by the stratosphere, the source of the event could
conceivably be hundreds or thousands of miles away from the
place where it is heard on the ground.'
But Dr Andrew Taylor, a senior lecturer in aviation at
Buckinghamshire New University, said the noises did not
sound like a normal sonic boom.
WHAT IS
HYPERSONIC TRAVEL AND WHAT CAUSES THE SONIC BOOM?
A supersonic plane is one that flies faster than the speed
of sound, at Mach 1 or greater, using a jet engine.
Mach 2.5 is about the speed limit for gas-turbine engines.
Any faster and the temperature and pressure of air entering
the engine is too high for the turbo machinery inside.
To fly at hypersonic speed - Mach 5 and above - requires a
different type of engine such as a supersonic-combustion
ramjet, or scramjet.
These engines have no moving parts. Instead of the rotating
compressor and turbine in a jet engine, air is compressed
and expanded by complex systems of shockwaves under the
front of the aircraft, inside the inlet and under the
fuselage at the rear.
Travel becomes hypersonic when temperatures get so hot that
air molecules become unstable and begin losing electrons. At
these speeds the air becomes an electrically-charged field.
At supersonic speeds, air moves through a series of channels
until is slowed down to a point where fuel can be more
easily injected and ignited. This releases energy and
thrust.
At hypersonic speed, this air moves even faster, which makes
it difficult to slow down to the speed of sound and
therefore requires specialist fuel and technologies, as seen
in engines including the pulse detonation engine (PDE).
Air reacts like a fluid to supersonic objects. As
objects travel through the air, molecules are pushed aside
with great force and this forms a shock wave much like a
boat creates a bow wave. The width of the so-called boom
'carpet' beneath the aircraft is around one mile (1.6km)
for each 1,000ft (304 metres) of altitude
A PDE can make between 60 and 100 detonations a second.
The sonic boom is created when an aircraft or other type of
vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound.
Air reacts like a fluid to supersonic objects. As objects
travel through the air, the air molecules are pushed aside
with great force and this forms a shock wave much like a
boat creates a bow wave. The bigger and heavier the
aircraft, the more air it displaces.
The width of the so-called boom 'carpet' beneath the
aircraft is around one mile (1.6km) for every 100ft (30.5
metres) of altitude.
An aircraft, for example, flying supersonic at 50,000ft
(15,240 metres) can produce a sonic boom cone about 50 miles
(80km) wide.
The sonic boom, however, doesn't sound the same at each
point. 'Because the sound wave that causes the boom can be
reflected by the stratosphere, the source of the event
could conceivably be hundreds or thousands of miles away
from the place where it is heard on the ground.' Steven Aftergood, Federation of American Scientists

The maximum intensity is heard directly beneath the
aircraft, and this decreases as the lateral distance from
the flight path increases until it ceases to exist because
the shock waves refract away from the ground.
The spread of the sonic boom depends only upon altitude,
speed and the atmosphere - and is independent of the
vehicle's shape, size, and weight.
Although the speed at which it was travelling, and its
location above the Atlantic could reduce this altitude and
spread.
Steven Aftergood, a government secrecy expert at the
Federation of American Scientists, said: 'If an aircraft is

'Because the sound wave that causes the boom can be

But Dr Andrew Taylor, a senior lecturer in aviation at
Buckinghamshire New University, said the noises did not
sound like a normal sonic boom.
Meanwhile, Professor Trevor Cox, an acoustic engineer from
Salford University told MailOnline: 'To have heard a noise
simultaneously in New York and the UK, the source of the
sound must have been flying half way between.
'That's an awful long way - about 4,000 miles. You do get
cases of sounds travelling a long way, for example, in 2005,
sounds from the Buncefield fire travelled around 125 miles
to Belgium.
'But in this instance, it sounds quite unlikely.'
With smaller fighter jets just a single boom would be heard,
or, as with Concorde, a "double boom" might be heard from
larger aircraft as both the nose and tail cause shock
waves,' he said.
'It sounds like gunfire or other ammunition, similar to what
I used to hear as a child growing up in Lincolnshire when
the RAF and USAF aircraft used to do bombing runs on the
east coast bombing ranges.
'It could be geological or meteorological, but certainly not
aeronautical in my opinion.'
Many Twitter users suspected sonic booms, similar to ones
which shook Kent last month when two RAF jets intercepted a
Latvian cargo plane in British airspace.
But a Ministry of Defence spokesman told MailOnline last
night she had no records of any jets being scrambled.
Others suggested unusual weather conditions might be the
source, but the Met Office dismissed those claims and said
there was nothing out of the ordinary.
A spokesman told MailOnline: 'It definitely wasn't
meteorological'.
The Metropolitan Police said there had been a fireworks
display in Croydon, but Twitter users insisted that could
not explain sounds in Bedfordshire, Glasgow, North Devon,
Leicestershire and West Sussex.
At around the same time, a loud boom was reported by a
number of people in the upstate New York areas of Buffalo,
Cheektowaga and Clarence more than 3,000 miles away.
People described it as loud enough to shake their homes and
rattle windows.
In the US, in particular, the boom was attributed to a
micro-earthquake.
But Brian Baptie, seismologist at the British Geological
Survey told MailOnline: 'Micro earthquakes are small.
'Usually too small for people to feel and it’s extremely
unlikely that the noises were caused by this.
'Even small earthquakes some have audible phenomenon. For
example, the Folkestone earthquake of 2007, that had a
magnitude of 4.3, had a loud booming noise.
'This is because the vibrations travel through the ground,
and when this is coupled with the atmosphere it generates
sound waves that can be heard over a large distance.
'But, observing this noise across such a large distance,
including across countries, is unlikely. THE RACE FOR
SUPERSONIC AND HYPERSONIC TRAVEL
Scramjets have been under development for decades,
but a breakthrough came in May 2013, when the U.S. Air
Force Research Laboratory’s Boeing X-51A WaveRider flew
for 240 seconds over the Pacific on scramjet power,
reaching Mach 5.1 and running until its fuel was
exhausted.
Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works - builder of the Mach 3.5
SR-71 Blackbird spyplane - then unveiled plans to develop
a successor, dubbed the SR-72, pictured
The next step is to build a high-speed cruise missile,
able to strike distant targets in minutes, not
hours.
Designed for reconnaissance and strike missions, the SR-72
would combine turbojet and ramjet/scramjet engines to
enable the aircraft to take off from a runway, accelerate
to a Mach 6 cruise, and then return to a conventional
runway landing.
If it can secure funding from the U.S. Defense Department,
Lockheed Martin believes a prototype could be flying as
soon as 2023 and the SR-72 could enter service by 2030,
potentially paving the way for commercial applications of
scramjet technology.
Many of the reports were picked up by Twitter user Virtual
Astronomer (pictured), who said space debris re-entering
the earth's atmosphere could have been responsible. He
also said he was convinced the noises were created by
aircraft sonic booms
One possible explanation is that the loud noise and
ground shaking could have been a meteorite breaking up in
the atmosphere, which would result in a sonic boom
- but this was dismissed by another expert
'It’s a well-known phenomenon and happens for big
earthquakes, but if this was the case it would have been
felt as well, too, so it is unlikely the booms would just be
down to an earthquake.'
Ms Angiletta, who recorded the sounds told MailOnline: 'I
was just at home watching TV when I couldn't hear the
program due to the loud noises. It was very distracting as
it went on for ages.
'I went out to look for fireworks but I couldn't see
anything in the sky. That's when I recorded the clip to send
to my family to see if they could hear the same
thing.'
The 27-year-old said that her family, who live roughly seven
miles away in Norbury, south London, could also hear the
sounds, which lasted for about 30 minutes. She then turned
to Twitter to see if anyone could explain what they
were.
If an aircraft is responsible, then it’s worth noting
that it may not be local at all... The source of the event
could conceivably be hundreds or thousands of miles away
Steven Aftergood, Federation of American Scientists
Many of the reports were picked up by Twitter user Virtual
Astronomer, who said space debris re-entering the earth's
atmosphere could have been responsible.
'Space debris such as old satellites and things can cause
sonic booms heard over very large areas,' he told
MailOnline. 'It's the same for big meteors or rocks that
come in.
'There was very little wind last night so conditions were
perfect for sound to travel very long distances.'
Science writer David Dickinson was among the experts who
dismissed the meteor theory.
He told MailOnline that there was one piece of debris from
Russian satellite Kosmos 2251 scheduled for re-entry, but
said that the timing was 'not a good fit' for it to have
been over the UK.
He added: 'I do not think it was a meteor or a piece of
space-junk, as the noises mentioned spanned a large segment
of time. Plus, unless it was cloudy over the U.K., there
would've been visual sightings.
Theories: There was no shortage of ideas when it came to
the possible source of the noises
Dave Reed, who lives in Fareham, Hampshire, said his dogs
'went crazy for a couple of minutes' after hearing what he
had assumed were fireworks.
The noises prompted conspiracy theories and immediate claims
of a 'media blackout'.
Twitter user Carrie Proctor wrote: 'This is how we'll find
our that WW3 has begun. It'll be a Twitter hashtag long
before any official announcement!'
One MailOnline reader heard similar noises in Belgium.
Hyacinth Fahsi, who lives in Grimbergen, near Brussels, said
the sound at 11pm local time - the same time as it was heard
in Britain - woke his daughter and matched the recording in
Croydon.
Describing the sound as 'repetitive explosions', he said: 'I
first thought it was firework but it was different. Maybe
thunder, but the sky was clear and I didn't see lightning,
even far away.
'I wasn't thinking about it until my wife read your
article.' Do you have a recording of last night's loud bangs? If

Giant Microwave Pulse seen across Europe,

March 27, 2015
A few odd things occurred the night before, and in
the hours leading up to the airplane crash in
Southern France – which occurred near Barcelonnette
in the Alps.
A giant pulse of energy occurred on the night of
the 23rd going into the 24th:
Above:
Seen at the peak of the 1st blast – this large
distortion covered the entire Southern
Hemisphere. This blast was followed by a
secondary reverberation on the 24th.

French Submarine ‘Sinks’ Entire US Aircraft Carrier
Group During Wargames Friday, March 6, 2015 6:01
http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2015/03/french-submarine-sinks-entire-us-aircraft-carrier-group-during-wargames-3117928.html
A series of joint naval drills between the United States
and France recently didn’t quite turn out the way the
US, no doubt, expected. The practice scenario ended with
the French nuclear submarine that was acting the part of
an enemy ship “sinking” the American aircraft carrier
and most of its escort.
The exercises took place over 10 days starting in
mid-February off the coast of Florida. The French
nuclear attack submarine (SNA) ― named Saphir ― joined
US Carrier Strike Group 12, comprising the aircraft
carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (nicknamed the “Big
Stick”), several Ticonderoga cruisers or Arleigh Burke
destroyers and a Los Angeles class nuclear attack
submarine.
The exercises were meant to test the newly upgraded
carrier, which had undergone a four year, $2.6 billion
overhaul, ahead of the Strike Group’s deployment.
“We are going to experience real combat situations
from all angles, there will be training evaluations
from a hostile ship boarding, submarine attacks,
and enemy ships or vessels trying impede their justice
upon our strike group,” said Capt. Scott F.
Robertson, of the USS Normandy in a statement

Bang goes the no claims! Royal Navy nuclear submarine
suffers £500,000 damage after 'hitting floating ice' while
tracking Russian vessels
5,300-ton HMS Talent has a huge dent and
will be out of action for weeks
Defence officials have refused to
disclose exact details of the crash
It will cost an estimated £500,000 to
repair, navy sources have claimed

A British nuclear submarine suffered £500,000 damage in a
collision while tracking Russian vessels, The Mail on Sunday
can reveal.
The 5,300-ton HMS Talent limped back to port with a huge
dent and will be out of action for several months. Royal
Navy top brass are investigating the incident.
Last night, defence officials refused to disclose exact
details of the crash – including where or when it happened –
but they were adamant that HMS Talent struck ‘floating ice’
rather than a Russian sub.
But the collision, which ripped a 6ft hole at the top of the
conning tower, comes at a time of heightened tension between
Britain and Russia in the airspace over the North Sea and
beneath the waves.
Britain is understood to be mounting frequent patrols of the
North Sea and areas as far north as the Arctic Circle, while
the Russians have increased their submarine activity by half
in the past 18 months.
Navy sources say the damage to the nuclear-powered
submarine, which will cost as estimated £500,000 to repair,
is consistent with striking an object while trying to
surface.
Surfacing can be a risky manoeuvre because sonar equipment
on a submarine tends to look ahead for threats rather than
above. In addition, radar scanners do not work underwater.
After the crash, engineers from HMS Talent’s 130-strong crew
found that the impact had devastated the submarine’s outer
layer of acoustic tiles.
These square-shaped 2in-thick tiles minimise the vessel’s
transmission of sound waves and other signals that could
reveal her position.
The Royal Navy’s explanation that HMS Talent struck ice was
also used to explain damage to British submarines during the
Cold War which was later found to have been caused by enemy
vessels.
In 1981, the crew of HMS Sceptre were ordered to say they
had hit an iceberg after their collision with the Russian
submarine K-211.
HMS Talent, which was launched in 1988, is a ‘hunter-killer’
submarine used to attack ships and other submarines, and
also to perform a surveillance role. She is fitted with
Tomahawk cruise missiles, cameras and thermal imaging
periscopes.
In 2009, she suffered loss of primary and alternative power
supplies to her nuclear reactors. Navy sources insist there
was no such power problem on this occasion.
A Navy source said: ‘Striking ice is a problem of the
environment we work in. Some patches of ice show up on our
scanners but not all, with the density of the ice also being
a factor. On this occasion some damage was sustained by HMS
Talent.
‘A submarine is a very pressured environment and a lot can
go wrong. You’re in a tin can under the sea tracking Russian
subs and trying not to get found ourselves. HMS Talent’s
captain, helmsman and her officers will have been making
multiple calculations simultaneously and working in very
testing conditions.’
The activity of Britain’s fleet of nuclear submarines is
strictly classified. Last night, the Royal Navy would say
only that the incident happened last year. The submarine was
photographed last month on her arrival at the Submarine
Refit Complex at Devonport, where the repairs are taking
place.
A Royal Navy spokesman said: ‘HMS Talent suffered minor
superficial damage after striking some floating ice last
year. She remained fully operational and continued with her
deployment.’

In late December 2014, the Iranian Army conducted the
“Muhammad Rasul Allah” naval and ground exercise, covering
2.2 million square kilometers and reaching eastwards beyond
the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Aden. According to
Iranian reports, in this exercise drones were used for
suicide missions for the first time.
Iranian Army ground forces commander Ahmad-Reza Purdastan
said: “This exercise saw our first use of a suicide drone
that can be used to attack aerial and ground targets. This
is a mobile bomb. In accordance with the existing
capabilities of the [Iranian] industry, we have improved the
range and operational capabilities of our drones. They
currently carry better equipment and are furnished with more
sophisticated cameras. These drones are the ground forces’
long arm on the battlefield.”[1]
Ground forces deputy commander Kiomars Heydari said that
Iran had modified the Yasir drone for suicide
missions,[2] and added that the exercise had featured
three types of suicide drones.[3] Ground forces
operations officer Ali Mehrabi added, “Iran has the ability
to modify all its drones for suicide operations… In the next
maneuvers, we will expand this capability.”[4]
The Iranian website Tasnim, which is affiliated with the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), explained that
suicide drone operations are effective even though the drone
is lost, because they inflict heavy losses on the enemy by
targeting advanced platforms such as aircraft carriers,
warships, jets, and helicopters. On December 31, 2014, the
Iranian website Mashregh News, which is affiliated with
security circles, presented 10 drone models and said that
while some of them were already being used for suicide
missions, others could be modified for such operations.
According to the website, these drones, with a range of 250
km, are meant to be used against Israel, but it is safe to
assume that this threat was also directed against Saudi
Arabia due to its oil war against Iran.[5]

It should be mentioned that Iran sees developing its drone
array as an important foundation for its deterrence
capability and for its ambition of achieving regional
military hegemony. Thus, in a March 6, 2015 Iranian TV
interview, IRGC deputy commander Hossein Salami: “Today, we
have reached an important point in our drone technology. Our
capabilities are so advanced that, for instance, one of our
stealth drones can fly for 30 hours straight. Its
operational range is 3,000 km, and it is extraordinarily
effective in identifying and attacking targets.”[6]

“Few countries are currently active in this arena. Last
year, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that its
newest suicide drone would be inaugurated by 2016… Although
the cost of such a mission meaning the destruction of the

in wars. Thus, for example, a suicide drone striking the
hull or bridge of an aircraft carrier during a war, or a
suicide drone destroying a warship’s radar, could disable
the vessel completely, or at least seriously hamper its
mission… [Additionally,] if a suicide drone strikes a

Mashregh Presents 10 Iranian Drone Models Suitable For
Suicide Operations
On December 31, 2014, Mashregh News posted an article
reviewing Iranian drone models that could be used for
suicide operations:[8]
“The great and mighty ‘Muhammad Rasul Allah’ exercise
conducted by the military of the Islamic Republic of Iran
have ended… and dozens of new military developments were
successfully tested by various units. One of these
developments, that sent shockwaves across international
media, were the suicide drones. This achievement was so
important that the prime minister of the Zionist regime,
Netanyahu, demanded, at a meeting with an American
Republican senator, that the illegal sanctions on Iran be
ramped up.
“Which Iranian Army drones can be used as suicide drones?
The most important attribute, underlined in this exercise
numerous times with regard to drone models, is the 250-km
range of this new Iranian Army weapon…
“A suicide drone with a range of 250 km is very likely one
of the ground forces’ drone [models] that have been modified
for suicide missions: … the Saeqa, the Mohajer-2, the
Mohajer-4, the Yasir, the Advanced Mohajer-2… Each of these
drones can very accurately hit its target if it is equipped
with new and accurate guidance systems. Additionally, if
there are relay points within a range of 250 km, the drone
can also relay images for optical homing and increase its
striking accuracy.
“The Saeqa
“Several models of this drone are produced under the same
name. Saeqa-1 can fly for 60 minutes at 250 km/hr and can
therefore easily reach a range of 250 [km]. It is a
delta-wing drone with lower than average radar
detectability, designed by local experts and manufactured on
an industrial scale. It is one of Iran’s fastest drones and
it is used as an artillery weapon.
Saeqa-2 drone
「Saeqa-2ドローンのトップスピードは230~250 キロ/時であり、45~60分間飛行することができます。

“The Saeqa-2 drone’s top speed is 230-250 km/hr, and it can
fly for 45-60 minutes. This model can be modified into a
suicide drone with a 250-km range. Its control station
functions as a relay for the telemetry required to guide and
control it, and the drone has both uplink and downlink
capabilities meaning that it can both receive flight
information and store and display data.
“In complete autopilot mode, the waypoints of the flight
path and altitudes are stored in the drone’s onboard memory
by the pilot at the ground [control] station. The drone
enters mission mode and follows a path that has been preset
by the pilot using GPS and an altimeter.

“The Raad/Raad-85
“This model is also a variant of the Saeqa, and is equipped
with a 10-kg warhead for suicide operations. Its range is
100 km and it can broadcast images until it strikes the
target. Accordingly, the operator can improve striking
accuracy with a deviation of less than one meter while
receiving telemetry on the updated status of the target.
Additionally, if a more important target is spotted in the
footage, it can be prioritized and targeted instead.
“Considering that this model was developed by the army’s
ground forces, it seems more logical that initially they
would construct an [improved] model with greater range, but
it should be noted that aircraft usually cruise under top
speed. Therefore, it can be deduced that Saeqa drones cannot
fly 250 km with a warhead without the appropriate
improvement and upgrading.
「Mohajer-2 /アドバンストMohajer-2
「...イランの地上部隊は、その範囲のためこの無人機を 持っています。この機は210キロ/時、90分間飛行する能

” The Mohajer-2/Advanced Mohajer-2
“…Iran’s ground forces have this drone, whose range can
reach 250 km because of its top speed of 210 km/hr and its
ability to fly for 90 minutes. This drone has already shown
that it can carry 12 30-kg RPG rockets. Therefore, even
considering the reduction in velocity from carrying a heavy
load, the Mohajer-2 can be made into a 250-km range suicide
drone.

“The Advanced Mohajer-2, which was recently presented at the

and which also participated in the ‘Muhammad Rasul Allah’

“The Toofan is another type of Iranian drone; it locates and
destroys the enemy by using an optical tracker. The drone
was designed for combat suicide operations. Due to its small
size, it can approach the enemy after a simple undetectable
launch, from various points, and because of its high speed
it is difficult for the enemy to react in time. The drone is
constructed of lightweight radar-absorbing materials and has
a very small radar cross-section. A front-facing camera in
the nosecone transmits live images until the moment of
impact, to increase homing accuracy.
“This drone’s top speed is 250 km/hr and it can fly for over
an hour. It was designed from the outset for suicide
missions, and since it is equipped with state-of-the-art
avionics, it is a viable option [over other suicide drones].
“Its small dimensions and radar cross-section, as well as
its ability to shut off its engine as it approaches the
target, allow it to remain undetected by the enemy until the
moment of impact. In addition, after several attacks from
such drones, the enemy will panic…”

Drone laced with radiation lands on Japan PM's office
Authorities launch investigation after small drone laced
with radiation and carrying small camera found on office
roof.
22 Apr 2015 20:47 GMT | Politics, Asia Pacific
Authorities in Japan have launched an investigation after a
small drone laced with radiation was found on the roof of
the prime minister's office.
No injuries or damage were reported in the incident, and
police said on Wednesday that they were investigating the
possibility it had crashed during a flight.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is currently in Indonesia
attending an Asian-African conference.
Video from public television broadcaster NHK earlier showed
dozens of police officers and officials around the drone,
which was covered by a blue tarpaulin.
The drone, which was about 50 centimetres in diameter, had
four propellers and was carrying a small camera and a
plastic bottle with unidentified content inside, Tokyo's
Metropolitan Police Department said.
It said the bottle was believed to be the source of
radioactive cesium contamination.
The drone was also decorated with a symbol that warns of
radioactive material, according to NHK.
Wake-up call
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the incident was
a wake-up call to problems caused by the unmanned aerial
devices, including possible attacks when Japan hosts a Group
of Seven summit next year, as well as the 2020 Olympics in
Tokyo.
"There is a possibility that drones might be used for
terrorist attacks," Suga told reporters at a news
conference.
"Taking into consideration the latest incident, we will
review drone use and measures for possible terrorist attacks
using drones. We'll do our utmost to prevent terrorist
attacks."
Small drones are becoming increasingly popular in Japan and
are often used for performances, aerial filming and other
purposes, but have been raising safety concerns.
In the US in January, a wayward drone flown by an off-duty
intelligence employee crashed on grounds of the White House,
raising questions over commercial and consumer drone use.
Japanese aviation laws have no restrictions for flying
unmanned equipment at, or below, 250 metres above ground
except for flight routes.
Blog: Why is the US sending its warships to Yemen?
Questions remain about whether the US plans to intercept
potential shipments of Iranian weapons to the Houthi rebels.
22 Apr 2015 00:23 GMT | War & Conflict,
Politics, Yemen, Middle East, US
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Patty Culhane White
House Correspondent
Whenever the US starts talking about weapons of war, I tend
to focus on the details. I have to say there are more than a
few of those missing when it comes to what the United States
plans to do in Yemen.
We know the US is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt to
patrol off the coast. That will bring the total to eight US
warships in the area.
The announcement and the leaks from the Pentagon were
straight out of their usual playbook. On the record,
officials said the ship was going. Then came the off the
record, not for attribution reporting. Unnamed defence
sources told reporters the ships were going in order to
“intercept potential shipments of Iranian weapons to the
rebels”.
That allowed officials to dial it back a bit the following
day, without looking like they actually were. You can’t go
back to an unnamed official and say he lied.
The point is the story was out there. The message had been
sent to Iran: the US could try to block them.
There are a couple of issues that need to be addressed.
First and foremost, what evidence does the US have that Iran
is in fact shipping weapons? We’ve heard the White House
press secretary Josh Earnest say they have evidence, but he
did not reveal what it is. That seems important.
Unanswered questions
The US won’t answer the basic question of whether they plan
to board any ships. The bigger question should be - can
they? What legal authority does the US have to intervene off
the coast of Yemen?
White House officials didn’t have to answer that question,
surprisingly. When they talk about why the warships are
going it is to keep “shipping lanes” open.
They repeatedly talked about the United Nations Security
Council arms embargo. So let’s take a look at resolution
UNSCR 22116 – it says:
14. ...all Member States shall immediately take the
necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply,
sale or transfer to, or for the benefit of Ali Abdullah
Saleh, Abdullah Yahya al Hakim, Abd al-Khaliq al-Huthi, and
the individuals and entities designated by the Committee …,
and those acting on their behalf or at their direction in
Yemen.”
To be clear, people were sanctioned, but the Obama
administration believes there is a weapons embargo to the
entire Houthi group because they are "acting on their
behalf".
We don’t know if the US is going to use that as legal
justification to board ships off the coast of Yemen. They
haven’t had to answer that question, or as it turns out,
pretty much any question about what the US Navy will be
doing there.

Russia could detonate nuclear weapons over Yellowstone
supervolcano and San Andreas fault to completely annihilate
America says retired Kremlin military analyst
• Konstantin Sivkov
wrote that Russia needs a new 'asymmetric' weapon
• He says detonating
nuclear weapons on seafloor would unleash tsunamis
• Seismic activity
would trigger volcano, pour feet of ash over the US
• He says tsunamis
could affect 240 million Americans and hit Europe too
• Analyst says new
weapons could be ready within 10 years
• TV presenter
previously said Russia could turn US to 'radioactive dust'

A Russian military analyst has said that his country should
develop weapons that can cause a nightmare scenario of
tsunamis and volcano eruptions in the US, potentially
killing hundreds of millions.

Konstantin Sivkov, who writes a column for the Military-Industrial
Courier, wrote earlier this month that Russia needed
new 'megaweapons' to unleash chaos and guarantee destruction
of its enemies.
In an article titled 'Nuclear Special Forces' he said that
Russia should develop nuclear weapons manned by a small
force that can cause tsunamis on the US coasts and force a
volcano in Yellowstone National Park to erupt.

He said that the main objective of the new system would
serve as an asymmetric threat against the US, which is
'moving to the borders or Russia'
Sivkov headlines sections of his article with headers such
as 'Specifications for Megaweapons', 'One Day Without
America,' 'The Day After Tomorrow' and 'The Apocalypse-
Simply and Cheaply'
The Russian analyst reasoned that because 80 per cent US
population lives near the coast, generating tsunamis on the
San Andreas fault and in the Atlantic would be an effective
way of causing massive damage to 240 million people.
He references Hurricane Katrina's impact on New Orleans and
says that detonating nuclear bombs near the bottom of the
ocean would create waves almost a mile high that would sweep
inland.
The military man says that all the seismic activity could
release another wave that would wipe out the US's European
allies.
Sivkov, the president of the Academy of Geopolitical
Problems, says that Russia's large inland territory in
Siberia will protect it from receiving too much harm.
He raises the stakes for the apocalyptic scenario even
further by saying that the tsunami could trigger the
Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano that last exploded
640,000 years ago.

発生する津波が24000万人への大規模な損害を与える効果 的な方法であると推論した。
The explosion would then unleash feet of volcanic ash over
all of the United States.
According to Sivkov, Russia could also trigger just the
volcano with a 'relatively small' megaton blast because it
has shown signs of activity.
Sivkov said that the normal nuclear deterrent was not good
enough and too expensive given Russia's economic problems.
While he is convinced of his idea, it remains to be seen if
the tsunami and the litany of destruction that followed
would be even be possible if the world came to nuclear war.
The journal that the analyst writes for is a niche
publication with less than 2,000 fans on the Russian social
network VKontakte.
He may not have the ear of President Vladimir Putin, but
Sivkov has a history of making attention-grabbing statements
about Russian military affairs for state-backed media.
Sivkov said that his new nuclear deterrent idea could be
deployed from one ship and could be ready within ten years.
He has imagined potential war between the US and Russia
before, telling the pro-Kremlin Independent Newspaper that
military games in eastern Russian north of Japan were
'intended to simulate a response to a hypothetical attack by
Japanese and US forces.'
His other articles in VPK repeatedly call for bigger and
more powerful weapons for the Russian military and he has
bemoaned Russia's lack of military spending compared to the
US, according to the Moscow
Times.
Russians' once positive views of America have slid sharply
since the beginning of rising tensions between Moscow and
Washington over Syria and Ukraine.
In January 81 per cent of residents said they had a very bad
or generally bad view of the US.
Imagining America turned to ashes is a frightening thought,
though Sivkov's article was not the first time that it had
been floated recently in Russia.
During the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis and Russia's
annexation of Crimea, state-run television presenter Dmitry
Kiselyov said that President Obama's gray hair was because
of worries about Russian nuclear weapons.
He said that Russia was 'the only country in the world
capable of turning the USA into radioactive dust.'
A report that was released in October by Swiss investment bank
Credit Suisse, claimed that the top 1% of households account for
half of all assets in the world – estimated at $250 trillion. The
richest 10% own 87.7% of the world’s wealth, leaving 12.3% for the
bottom 90% of the population.

Once debts have been subtracted, a person needs only $3,210 to be among the
wealthiest half of world citizens. However, a person would
need $68,800 in order to be a member of the top 10% of global
wealth holders, and $759,900 to belong to the top 1%. While the
bottom half of adults collectively own less than 1% of total
wealth, the richest decile holds 87.7% of assets, and the top
percentile alone accounts for half of total household wealth.

Within the top 1%, there is a much more elite club: the 0.36
percenters. These are adults with a net worth of more than $50
million, and there’s just 123,800 of them in the world. At the
base of the global wealth pyramid are those with a net worth of
less than $10,000, these people account for a massive 71% of the
world’s adult population – that’s 3.4 billion individuals. A
further billion adults – 21% of the global population – fall in
the $10,000–$100,000 range.
Deepening global economic inequality is being driven by American
capitalism – the US has less than 5% of the world’s population,
but a staggering 46% of the world’s millionaires. The report

“There
are strong reasons to think that the rise in wealth inequality
since 2008 is mostly related to the rise in equity
prices and to the size of financial assets in the United
States and some other high-wealth countries, which
together have pushed up the wealth of some of the richest
countries and of many of the richest people around the world.
The jump in the share of the top percentile to 50% this year
exceeds the increase expected on the basis of any underlying
upward trend. It is consistent, however, with the fact that
financial assets continue to increase in relative importance
and that the rise in the USD over the past year has
given wealth inequality in the United States―which
is very high by international standards―more weight in the
overall global picture.”

“The report illustrates how the ‘trickle up’ economic model is working its
magic for the super rich at the expense of the rest. This
is bad news for global economic growth and bad news for
democracy. Our political leaders must take action now to raise
the incomes of the poor and maintain the incomes of the middle
class,” said Claire Godfrey, global inequality policy lead
for Oxfam.
Mark Goldring, the chief executive of Oxfam, told the Guardian,
“This is the latest evidence that extreme inequality is out
of control. Are we really happy to live in a world where
the top 1% own half the wealth and the poorest half own just
1%?”
